The Naked And Famous have a tendency to write heavily synth charged anthems. Higher takes each verse directly into a refrain that's almost shouted each time it's sung, with each new obstacle or stumbling block that should trip them instead serving to "raise our voices higher, higher". Rather than the "sea of changes", the "battered bones", or the "weight that brought us here" battering hopes, they can paradoxically elevate purpose and lift spirits. Raising a voice higher almost hints at prayer, of channeling hardship and enduring a little pain with the shared burden of a higher power.
Higher was written at a time when the band was about to split up. The completion of the song and the album Simple Forms is like a representation of the meaning of the lead single on the album: even heartache can become more than just pain.
